“Shoot Down Those Gunboats”?

It seems that Donald the Orange is thumping his chest again over Iran…..he has stated that it is okay to shoot down those Iranian gunboats…..

Both Politico and the New York Times frame it as an “abrupt” tweet from the president: “I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea,” wrote President Trump on Wednesday morning. It comes a week after 11 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy vessels came very close to six US Navy and Coast Guard ships in the Persian Gulf and zipped around at high speeds. The Times notes Trump said nothing at the time. Politico spoke with a former defense official who said that if such an order was made, it would be a major shake-up to the current rules of engagement, which stipulate that commanders respond only to direct threats; it gives the example of an Iranian ship firing at an American one.

Harassment doesn’t fall under the umbrella of “direct threat,” says Michael Mulroy, who was recently the Pentagon’s Middle East policy chief. “The US Navy has clear rules of engagement … [that] are consistent with all applicable laws of the sea and armed conflict,” and escalate from audible warnings to flares to maneuvers; firing shots generally come as a last resort. A tweet likely isn’t sufficient to change those rules of engagement, explains former Navy Secretary Ray Mabus. The Times spoke with a Defense Department official who says no formal policy directive from the president has been received. Another source says there have been no repeats of last week’s incident.

Does this mean that I can “shoot down” those a/holes on their jet skis if they harass me in my party barge?

This is a stupid order on Donald the Orange’s part…..we do NOT need another war to finance and another war for Americans to die in…..

Maybe we need to step back for a moment….

The United States can discourage Iran’s lethal and nonlethal aggression by demonstrating a willingness to escalate through covert, cyber, information and kinetic operations. Establishing credible escalation options that can address nonlethal violence is vital to protecting America’s interests in the Middle East.

No one wants a war with Iran. Yet innovative escalation responses can satisfy the American public’s desire to avoid a conventional war while signaling to Iran that its behavior needs to change. At the low end, this could include nonlethal or cyber response attacks against Iranian proxies that engage in rocket attacks. Cyber operations to compromise Iranian weapons facilities and communication with its proxies, targeted information operations against Islamic Revolutionary Guard leaders, and deniable gray zone operations that cripple munitions and bases are useful responses for any level of hostility. Each avoids reaching the level of conventional warfare.

Change US Escalation Calculus With Iran

We do NOT need this macho bullshit right now….we have enough on our plate with endless wars and a pandemic that we must fight.

Donald the Orange just needs to STFU (something that he is incapable of doing) and let the adults work the room.

Like set up a hotline between the US and Iran to avoid an escalation…….

The U.S. and Iran have come perilously close to full-fledged military conflict thrice in the past eleven months. The tensions emanate from the Trump administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran and Tehran’s “maximum resistance” response, both triggered by the U.S. decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal and reimpose economic sanctions. Neither side appears to be seeking a war, but both have heightened the risk of one by engaging in provocative acts with little ability to communicate. As illustrated by President Donald Trump’s 22 April threat to “shoot down” any Iranian boat harassing U.S. ships, the danger may be greatest in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, where oil tankers and naval vessels help clog the sea lanes. The adversaries’ incapacity to communicate instantly when incidents happen opens the door to unintentional escalation if one side misreads the situation and, as a result, miscalculates. Establishing an operational channel, facilitated by a third party such as Oman, could minimise risks of such a scenario. If successful, a mechanism of this type could be replicated in other regional flashpoints.

  1. With apologies to the Bard…
“tFump is but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
    Signifying nothing.”

      1. No problem….I understand I live on coffee…I usually blame the keyboard saying it cannot spell…..chuq

  2. Being pedantic, I was upset that he didn’t know the difference between ‘sinking’ a gunboat, and ‘shooting down’ a gunboat. Maybe he thinks Iran has flying gunboats? I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he did.
    Best wishes, Pete.
