Will Iraq Have A Silver Lining?

Many seem to think that the defeat of ISIS in Iraq will bring to an end to this barbaric chapter of the country. (I am not one of them)……

So the question is….with the defeat of ISIS will there be a silver lining?  Will Trump beat his chest with the defeat of ISIS?  What will be the outcome of said defeat?  Who will win and who will lose?

Below is a commentary I read in Reuters…..

Will the defeat of Islamic State in Iraq be a foreign policy victory for Donald Trump? With the fall of Mosul imminent, what happens next?

There will be winners, like the Kurds. There will be losers, like Iraq’s Sunni minority. There will be gains for Iran, which backs the Shi’ite militias drafted to fight Sunni-dominated IS. And there may be a silver lining for the Trump administration – specifically in the form of Kurdish independence and permanent American bases in a Shi’ite-ruled Iraq. But any declaration of “victory” on the part of the United States depends on how the measure of those results is taken.

Start with the Kurds. Their military forces currently control a swath of northern territory, including the oil-rich province of Kirkuk. The area has been a functional confederacy since soon after the American invasion of 2003 and in spite of likely opposition from Baghdad, a fully-realized nation-state of Kurdistan seems inevitable. The Kurds certainly think so; they’ll hold an independence referendum on September 25.

  1. Finish one war, start another. That’s all that will happen. Declared independence for Kurdistan will set off a powder keg that will take in Turkey too. Whose side will we be on then, I wonder?
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. THank you…I have been saying that for a decade now…no one is listening….it will indeed be the start of a whole new conflict….chuq

  2. I agree with you guys.. this is just the beginning of the next war. Anyway, ISIS is an ideology and while you might defeat it on the battlefield they will just return to what amounts to guerrilla warfare and car bombs. They will never be totally out of Iraq… or Iran… or Syria… or anywhere else for that matter. Frustrating watching all this.

      1. Well, they have their 73 virgins to look forward to.. (or is it raisins now?).. and we have a president with 59 Tomahawks. I feel so secure.

      2. the “Virgins” are a figment of some preachers mind and the Tomahawks are just there and apparently not very accurate…I still worry. LOL chuq

      3. You’re right. The Tomahawks were indeed a figment of someone’s mind. 🙂

      4. The after attack damage pics did not show me that they are anything but a figment…..59 destroyed little…..chuq

      5. Ah, yes. The things I turned those “innocent” rockets into when I was a kid would place me on the watch list today.

      6. They were indeed. It made me appreciate good old Americans working for NASA… like Werner von Braun. :/

      7. Just got off duty watching an empty parking lot.. with my pepper spray and handcuffs.. and my highly trained ability to use harsh language as a deterrent. So I am feeling quite useless at the moment. What better place to feel more useless than to blog away somewhere. 🙂

  3. Well… you just happened to be awake. What can I say. 🙂

  4. Normally, I would refrain from saying so, but, the comments were more entertaining than the subject matter of this one. The events that continue to play out in the Middle East, and, frankly, every other area on the planet with two opposing tribes of humans, are just more of the same-same, neither surprising, nor particularly unusual for this culture…. The Middle East has become ‘weather’, in the sense everybody has something to say about it, but, we are never going to really have much affect on it….

‘Twas, however, fun watching/reading the byplay….

    *grin*

    gigoid, the dubious

    ;cool:

  5. The best thing about defeating ISIS is that the pussies doing Archer can go back to using their spy agency’s name.
