My loyal readers know that I have a special place for the Middle East….having worked in the area for several years I came to appreciate the area and its people…….my job gave me access to the average person…..and they have very different attitudes that we hear every day on the tube……the Israel/Palestine question is a special concern of mine and I have written about it on many occasions………I have pointed out where I saw successes by the Palestinians and also the failures……for instance the first intifada was a success because the world saw Palestinian teenagers staring down Israeli tanks and armed soldiers and there only defense was rocks….this gave them a sympathetic eye to the world……then came the second intifada and it started as the first but then morons got involved and started shooting innocent civilians and sending rockets into Israel….this was a failure……sympathy swung to the Israelis….and it is going downhill for the Palestinians ever since.
Oh yeah the peace process….now here is a battle of futility……..after many years of meetings we are No closer to a solution than we were in 1948…….why you may ask? Meetings! Meetings do nothing but give the different sides to re-formulate their plans of annihilation of one another…..this so-called “war” is an institution for both sides and once it achieved that status normal avenues to solutions ceased to be effective……….
Now the question is……Is there a solution?
Yes, there is in my opinion….Settlements!
The PLO may have found a new way of dealing with the issue……
The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) threatened Wednesday to sue Israel through international bodies if it continues expanding illegal settlements in the occupied territories, warning it was an issue that could torpedo fledgling peace talks.
“These are not just dots on a map,” PLO executive committee member Hanan Ashrawi said of more than 2,000 new settler homes which were approved for construction ahead of a resumption of peace negotiations late last month.
“These are willful and destructive measures to prevent the creation of a Palestinian state.”
“If Israel carries out these plans… we will be forced to (have) recourse to international judicial processes through international institutions,” she told reporters near the settlement neighborhood of Gilo, south of Jerusalem, where many of the new units are to be built.
Ashrawi warned that Israeli settlement building threatened once again to torpedo peace efforts.
“We are not prepared to make the same mistakes and to have talks for their own sake as Israel continues… unilateral measures” such as further settlement building, she said.
She urged the United States to take a firm stance against settlements, following the example of the European Union.
“The EU guidelines are just the beginning of holding Israel accountable (for settlement building). We call on all other countries to persist in holding Israel and the settlers accountable,” Ashrawi said.
The EU published guidelines last month that forbid its institutions from dealing with or funding any West Bank settlements.
This is a new tact for the Palestinians…….a lawsuit. I do not think that Israel will abide by any accord that goes against their wishes….but it could be an excellent tool for international recognition for the Palestinian state…….PR can go a long way in this 24 hour news world.
