The Worst/Best Thing That Could Happen

I was listening to a couple of pundits discuss the primaries in Michigan and Arizona….they were predicting the winner and by how much and they were talking about the consequences of the outcomes and I got to thinking about that also……..what if Romney won the nomination or if Santorum wins what would be the direction of the party going forward.
This is just stuff that has been running around my head as I contemplate the 2012 election…..let’s say mitt wins the nomination and after a hard fought campaign he loses to Obama in November…how will that effect the GOP? My thought is that if the so-called moderate of the party could not win then the possibility that the party will take an even harder turn to the right trying to find that balancing point that could lead them to the White House…..IMO, this would be the worst thing that could happen to the party for the next generation.
Now the best thing that could happen to the GOP. Santorum wins a difficult fight for the nomination and after a dirty campaign from both sides he is defeated by Obama…….How would this effect the party? I think that with a loss using a far right candidate the party would then come to their senses and start trying to find and work on a winning strategy by pulling it self back to the conservative ideals that has worked in the past to elect Repubs to the White House……it would give them the incentive to start governing and cease all the divisive issues and work on plans that will give the country a fighting chance…..
I think that no matter who wins the nomination of the GOP it will change the party…….it could be for the better…..or it could be for the worse…….I realize that it will take more than one election for the system to change into a better system….but we have to start somewhere…….
These are indeed likely scenarios Dr. Chuq. But I suspect that the base of the GOP will continue its insanity and keep repeating their extremism for a few more election cycles, hoping that they will get different results doing and saying the same things.
Larry, the GOP is losing many member is Congress and if Rick wins I feel that sanity will return and they will go back to true conservatism…they lost Hagel, Snow, and the ones that have said they will not run again….the adults are starting to see that the party is on a self-destruct pattern……
I don’t know but they’re already moving further Right. Will that stop, regardless of who wins? For some reason, I don’t think so. Definitely not the GOP of yore. Which is sad.
This election will tell us if real conservatism is dead and replaced by extreme whack-a-doodles……
