The most horrible word that can be politically uttered is……TAXATION! Nobody wants to pay more or higher taxes…no matter where we live, the taxation is too much….but the reality is that taxes must be paid if the services that the people demand are to be provided….sorry, it is just that simple.
If you want to get elected in the US, you run on a lower taxes platform and you will usually get elected….promise the voter lower taxes and taste victory……people have been running on that promise for decades and so far it has NOT worked the way it was promised….but yet the next election we get the same lame promises and those making them get elected….the people do NOT learn from their mistakes……it is called democracy….
This election cycle we have a bit of a different lean going on….whether you call it a Fair Tax or a Value Added Tax (VAT), regardless what they want to call it…there will be higher taxes or at least a more fair taxation than we have now….even some of America’s biggest capitalists see the need…like Warren Buffet, the Oracle of Omaha…..
“In the end we are not taxing enough, unfortunately, or we’re spending too much, probably some of each,” Buffett told FOX Business’ Liz Claman. “We’ve got a gap of 10 percentage points between what we’re raising in taxes and what we’re spending. One way or another we are going to have to close that gap in a major way, so if some of those taxes fall on me, or some fall on Berkshire, that’s probably the way it should be.”
Irregardless what you think…if we are to protect our children and grandchildren from the disaster waiting on the horizon, then we will be paying higher taxes….but it will be…WHO will be paying the higher taxes and will it be a joint venture of all Americans? The thing to remember is that all taxes are bad, but public services that are promised to the people must be paid for in some way….and that way is through taxation….
The US is giving away its tax base all in the name of things like the “free markets”………companies get a free pass on taxes if they locate in a certain area or make a certain product or….well you get the idea….that is revenue lost……then we have a volume of tax deductions that help wealthy people avoid the fair share of the taxes…..another lost revenue…then there is the social security tax and Medicare tax….if you make above a certain amount then you do NOT have to pay any more SS taxes….more revenue lost……and there is more that gives away the revenue that the government could use to either lower the deficit or eliminate it.
Americans will be paying higher taxes…but the question is… will it be all Americans are just those working and surviving by the seat of their pants? The real answer would be to eliminate tax avoidance. It will be telling to watch the debate….that will tell one where the taxes will come from….will it be just YOU or from everyone?
Don’t blame the people – IF they’re going to learn, it will be by experience!
Promise lower taxes- give lowe taxes and if that means cutting services dramatically, then so be it. The people can then decide if they like it that way (which the majority well might in spite of what you think), or the politicians have the perfect excuse not to promise cuts but increases next time around – simple!
In spite of what most politicians think – honesty IS the best policy!
But the politicians should not choose to spend the money on wars of intervention……while making cuts to the services to the people of the country…any country…and if the people have NO prob with that then they need to support tax increases….
Personally, I agree, but some of the people may prefer wars to services at home – that’s their right in a democracy. If you want politicians to listen to the people, then you can’t complain if they do and a majority of the people don’t all want what you want – that’s the way democracy is supposed to work.
The problem for me is that taxes are not “fair and balanced”….meaning NOT everyone pays their fair share….usually it is those that less afford the taxes that get hit with them……hopefully everyone wants the children to have an education….this is the biggest one for me…..the US is to cut spending and it will be the future generations that pay that price….the same generation that pols yell about all the time they are screwing them….
Of course I (for instance) think that education is vital, but some don’t I’m sure and they have a perfect right to that view – just as I’m as certain as I can be that some younger citizens will feel that only ageing Americans with political blogs should pay for everything…
😈
PS: Spending more or less doesn’t equate to more or less or better or worse education – as we in the UK know only too well – it depends far more on HOW the money you DO have is spent!!!
Cut out bureaucracy and spend the money where it’s needed and wanted – you’d be amazed at the difference that simple step can make!
May I disagree? In my state they are spending less….that means one teacher for every 50 students…this is public school…of course it is much better in private schools…..spending less is losing teachers, closing schools and ending after school programs….none of this can be good for the educational standards in a state that ranks 49 out of 50 states……
Well, just because your state has got it UNBELIEVABLY wrong, still doesn’t invalidate my point. It STILL depends on HOW you spend the money – sack a bureaucrat, employ a teacher – same cost (roughly) and better education – SIMPLE!!!
Yes it does and these littler pricks have chose to spend it where it does little good….little good for the residents of the state…..it plays well with business and politicians…..all the while the people are getting a BIG one and NO kiss…..yes it is the bureaucrats….
Exactly – always the bureaucrats!
